Jamie Varner possibly taking on Shane Roller at WEC 53
Jamie Varner (16-4-1) announced yesterday via his Facebook page that he would most likely be fighting in his hometown of Arizona in December at the WEC 53. Varner is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Donald Cerrone at WEC 51 in which he took a pretty hard beating. Right after the fight though Varner lobbied that even though he lost he’d still like to fight in front of his hometown fans.
MMA Valor has heard from an undisclosed source that Jamie Varner will be fighting on the WEC 53 card and the likely opponent will be Shane Roller (8-3).
Roller is coming off a submission lost at the hands of Anthony Pettis at WEC 50 in August. He had won three fights in a row prior to the Pettis defeat and is 5-2 overall in the WEC. Roller’s only other lose in the WEC was to current lightweight champion Ben Henderson at WEC 40, who has also defeated Jamie Varner at WEC 46 to become the lightweight champ.
Varner is very popular fighter in the WEC and will be looking to get his first win since January of 2009 in front of his hometown fans.
[Update] A day after we posted this likely matchup, MMAWeekly has confirmed the story today and the fight will happen at WEC 53.
