Donald Cerrone Wants Cole Miller Next
This past week, we saw the WEC era come to an end. As bittersweet as it was, many extraordinary fights took place as the event ran its course. The two things that stick out in most people minds were Ken Stone being knocked out cold be Eddie Wineland from a slam and of course the crazy cage kick from Anthony Pettis in the main event.
The fight between Eddie Wineland and Ken Stone wasn’t what was being talked about, but the way the fight ended was. At about two minutes into the first round, Wineland slammed Stone and knocked him unconscious. According to many in the arena, Stone didn’t move for at least five minutes as ring-side physicians strapped him to a backboard and sent him off to the hospital.
For good reason the most talked about thing that night, that still being talked about today was Anthony Pettis executing a flying head kick on Ben Henderson after bouncing off the cage. After that moment, which Pettis named “the Showtime kick”, everything else that happened before then ceased to exist in our memories.
One of those overlooked “event” that happened pre-“Showtime” happened during Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone’s post-fight interview following his submission victory over Chris “The Polish Hammer” Horodecki. Cerrone openly challenged Cole “Magrinho” Miller to be his opponent in his UFC Debut. Yes, you read that correctly; Donald Cerrone called out Cole Miller and wants him to be his next opponent.
The thing that stood out most about this, more so than the actual “calling out”, was Cerrone’s reasoning behind it. When most fighters call another fighter out, it’s usually because 1) they consider them ahead of them and a victory would push their own career further ahead, 2) they hold a victory over them and want to avenge it or 3) they are the current champion and want the title belt. However, Cerrone’s was a little different: “I want to fight him because after he beat Garcia, he was very arrogant and disrespectful and I want to teach him a lesson.” While Garcia is Cowboy’s teammate, that fight was over three years ago and that seems like a bit of a long time to hold on to a grudge.
Unfortunately for Cowboy, Cole Miller is already scheduled to fight Matt Wiman at UFC: Fight for the Troops 2 on January 22nd. Miller did take notice, though, and took to twitter to address Cowboy with this, “@colemillerATT: @cowboycerrone wish I could’ve seen it live so my blood could boil I was on a plane but after I fight Wiman I’ll gladly remove one of your arms.” Later that night, Cowboy responded simply with “bring that shit on”. It seems like both guys want this fight, but whether this fight will come to fruition or not will only be told with time.
In trying to incorporate the WEC Lightweights into the UFC, there are a lot of intriguing matchups and this is definitely one of them. Joe Silva and Dana White are all about making matchups that the fans want, and if Cerrone can get people talking about it and build up a big enough following behind it, Donald Cerrone vs. Cole Miller could very well happen sometime in the not-so-distant future.
