Following a solid undercard once again, the UFC 131: Dos Santos vs. Carwin main card performed but was filled with several “whodathunk” moments. At the top of that list would have to be in the main event as heavy-handed heavyweights, Junior Dos Santos and Shane Carwin went the full 15 minutes.

Fighting for a spot in a heavyweight title fight opposite Cain Velasquez, both Dos Santos and Carwin had promised a knockout and everyone agreed. Dos Santos looked to pull off the called shot near the end of round one when he dropped Carwin and reeled off nearly 30 consecutive punches. Surprisingly thought referee Herb Dean didn’t stop the fight and the battered Carwin and his bloody face got out of the round.

Expecting the fight to be finished in the second round, Carwin hung tough and actually stunned Dos Santos a few times. In round three, Dos Santos seemed to be ok with cruising to the unanimous decision while keeping him clean and healthy for his title shot. It wasn’t until late in the round that Dos Santos looked to finish Carwin off, but by then it was too late and in came the judges’ scorecards.

A close second to the main event was “whodathunk” that Demian Maia would come in and out strike Mark Munoz in round one. All the talk was that Maia would need to take the fight down for a chance to win against the wrestler with heavy hands in Munoz. While Munoz ultimately got the decision win, Maia‘s striking looked much improved and nearly shocked everyone by winning the fight standing.
