Bellator 46 opens another Featherweight Tournament

| June 24, 2011 | Reply

Earlier this week we gave you a look into the Inaugural Bellator Summer Series that will be the home for what should be an exciting featherweight tournament. Today we take a little gander at the 8 Man Featherweight Tournament that begins Saturday Night as a part of Bellator 46 on MTV2.

• Pat Curran vs. Luis Palomino:

Curran made waves when he upset favorite Roger Huerta en route to becoming Bellator Season 2 Lightweight Tournament Champion. He didn’t have so much luck when it came to his competing for the title against Lightweight Division stand out Eddie Alvarez back in April. Saturday Night Curran will drop back down to Featherweight, the weight class he’s fought at for the better part of his MMA career. Waiting to greet Curran inside the Bellator cage will be Luis Palomino. Palomino was eliminated in the 1st Round of Bellator’s very first Featherweight Tournament all the way back at the promotions debut in 2009. A win over Curran would be huge for the Team Nogueria product who’s coming off 3 straight wins in various organizations since we last saw him fighting at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel for Rebney and Co.

• Marlon Sandro vs. Genair da Silva

Genair da Silva will make his Bellator debut against former Sengoku KO Machine Marlon Sandro as part of the Featherweight Quarterfinals. Silva will have his work cut out for him when he makes his stateside debut against the odds on favorite to win this thing in Sandro. The Brazilian (Sandro) is coming off a 10 fight stint in Japan where he annihilated any and everyone not named Hioki or Omigawa. Whether he wins or loses, the debut of Marlon Sandro under the BFC banner is sure to be one of the things fight fans will be talking about when this stacked 3 day MMA weekend comes to a close.

• Nazareno Malegarie vs. Jacob DeVree

You may remember Nazareno Malegarie from last seasons Featherweight Tournament where his 19 fight undefeated streak came to an end against the eventual runner-up in Daniel Straus. For all I know Jacob DeVree may be your favorite fighter. I’ve personally never heard of the guy but from the looks of his Sherdog bio it appears he likes to rear naked choke grown men and even dislocate their shoulders.

• Ronnie Mann vs. Adam Schindler

Former Cage Gladiators and current Sharks Fights Champ Ronnie Mann is another one of those Featherweights poised to enter the ranks. Winning this Tournament would do just that. Standing in his way is Adam Schindler. You may remember Schindler from the Strikeforce: Houston card where he made his home town proud by submitting his opponent in under 2 minutes via RNC.

The Featherweight Division is quickly becoming the Premier division for Bellator Fighting Championships and another Tournament should provide Fireworks all the way until the end of August. The fighter who comes out on top of this 8 Man “Summer Series” Featherweight Bonanza earns themselves a shot at whomever holds the Bellator Featherweight Championship come Season 5. Current Champ Joe Warren will defend the belt against Season 4 Tournament Winner Patricio “Pitbull” Freire early next month at Bellator 47.
