KJ Noons and Josh Thomson in the works for Strikeforce card in March
With the Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez running short of opponents; two possible contenders have verbally agreed to fight at the Strikeforce event sometime in March. Former champions Josh Thomson (18-4) and K.J. Noons (11-4) will face off and the winner quite possibly could position themselves next in line for Melendez.
The March event has been reported by MMAjunkie as being “Strikeforce Grand Prix Final: Barnett vs. Cormier” and taking place on March 3 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Nothing has been made official yet but we do know that the said card will air live on Showtime with prelims on Showtime Extreme.
Thomson has been battling injuries forever, or at least it feels that way. The AKA fighter fought three times (2-1) in 2010, losing his last fight of the year on the last day of the year. Thomson missed the entire 2011 year due to injuries, including a foot injury that forced him out bout with Maximo Blanco at September’s Strikeforce Grand Prix: Barnett vs. Kharitonov card.
Noons got himself a win after his first-ever two fight skid at last month’s Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal with a unanimous decision over Billy Evangelista. The win was the former boxer’s second fight at lightweight after his first three fight in Strikeforce were at welterweight.
Noons is 3-2 overall with Strikeforce, while Thomson is 9-2.
