MMA News not related to Condit vs. Diaz 2
The big MMA news right now is the possible rematch between the newly crowned interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit and the man he just defeated, Nick Diaz. The drama from their first fight and the pending announcement of their immediate rematch (or not!) has overshadowed several other MMA related news stories.
So let’s get you catch up:
Igor Pokrajac Replaces Brandon Vera against Thiago Silva (UFC on FX 3)
The rematch between Thiago Silva and Brandon Vera will have to wait. Vera lost to Silva at UFC 125 but a falsified drug test from Silva overturned the decision to a no contest their rematch was supposed to be Silva return bout from suspension. The UFC announced that Igor Pokrajac will step in to face Silva now and the bout will remain on the UFC on FX 3 card schedule for May 15th. Pokrajac is coming off a first round knockout of Krzysztof Soszynski and has won two in a row.
Donald Cerrone vs. Yves Edwards booked for UFC on FX 3
Two fighters coming off recent defeats, Donald Cerrone and Yves Edwards look to get back on track when they face each other at UFC on FX 3. Edwards lost to Ultimate Fighters winner Tony Ferguson by unanimous decision, while Cerrone lost a unanimous decision to Nate Diaz. Cerrone had won six in a row before being dismantled by Diaz at UFC 141. Edwards on the other hand has not been able to find any consistency since returning to the UFC in 2010.
Two UFC events get dates and locations
Mark you MMA calendars for Friday June 22nd and Saturday August 4th because the UFC will be holding a free card on those days. UFC on FX 4 has been scheduled for June 22nd in Atlantic City, New Jersey; it’ll be the promotions first trip back to Atlantic City since 2005. Just over a month later on August 4th the UFC on FOX 4 will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. No fights have been announced for either event.
UFC announces twitter Bonuses for this quarter
UFC officials yesterday announced the winners of the twitter bonuses, with each fighter receiving a $5,000 award in the following categories: “most followers”, “biggest percentage growth in followers” and “Most Creative”. Here is the full list of winners along with their twitter handle.
“Most Followers” = Cung Le (@CungLe185), UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (@SpiderAnderson), UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos (@Junior_Cigano) and Brendan Schaub (@BrendanSchaub).
“Biggest percentage growth in followers” = Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (@MinotauroMMA), Cung Le (@CungLe185), Roy Nelson (@RoyNelsonMMA) and Jake Ellenberger (@EllenbergerMMA).
“Most Creative” = Tim Kennedy (@TimKennedyMMA), Joseph Benavidez (@JoeB135), Duane “Bang” Ludwig (@DUANEBANGCOM) and Pat Barry (@HypeOrDie).
