Access Denied: Alistair Overeem Denied License to Fight
The soap opera that has been “Alistair Overeem” had its climatic cliffhanger ending today in Nevada as the UFC heavyweight went before the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The results of the drug test taken after a pre fight press conference for UFC 146 showed Alistair Overeem had an elevated Testosterone ratio of 14:1, which is well over the 6:1 ratio allowed by the NSAC.
Alistair Overeem was not licensed at the time of the test and his appearance at the NSAC meeting today was to address his license request.
Alistair Overeem and his lawyer addressed the commission, first asking for 30-45 day extension to plead their case regarding the failed test. That request was quickly denied and the commission began questioning Overeem, his lawyer and the doctor who supposedly gave Overeem whatever caused the elevated levels.
The questioning from the NSAC seemed to last forever and as time went on things looked less and less optimistic for Overeem. When the questioning concluded the commission denied Overeem’s request for license and handed him a 9 month suspension, retroactive to the date the test was taken (March 27th). The suspension was less than the typical 12 months which means Overeem can re-apply for a license on December 27th, just in time for the New Year’s mega event.
