UCMMA 28 Event Event Review
It’s the hottest day of the year so far and the temperature has gone through the roof here at the Troxy (and we’re not just talking about the Cage Girls) as fight fans prepare for the UCMMA 28 main event. Before that though, there is the small matter of an impressive undercard to get through.
Salih Kulucan takes on Steve Brazier for the first fight off the night and, as the fight heads towards a judge’s decision, Salih forces Brazier to submit through a rear naked choke. Kulucan’s celebration is one of exhaustion and ecstasy following a tough fight. Further down the undercard, Patrick Jalloah and Sean Carter both win by unanimous decision while Martin Sheridan and Makunga Bunduku get first round wins – Sheridan with a rear naked choke towards the end of the first round (much to the frustration of his opponent) and Bunduku with a submission through choke midway through the first.
As we head to the final three fights on the undercard, Danny Lawson gets a majority decision over Brendon Katz while, despite a clear height disadvantage, heavyweight Paul Taylor makes short work of his fight with youngster Scott Saward seeing him off in just over 30 seconds of the first round. Thankfully, as we reach the final fight of the undercard, Umer Kayani survives until the final minute of the first round before the fight is stopped after some hard-hitting from Jacek Kaminsky.
The first fight of the main card sees Chris Harman take on Luke Barnatt and, after something of a niggly head to head at the press conference, this one was certainly going to light the fuse for an explosive main card. With Harman clearly a tough nut to crack, Barnatt took him to the floor forcing him to tap out midway through the first round with a rear naked choke.
He may clown about in front of the cameras but celebrity Tony Giles is clinical in the cage and, after much joking about at the press conference, it was down to business as he took on UCMMA debuting Aruna Slicius, finishing him off in just over two and a half minutes of the first round.
Last time it was Michael Page who wowed fans with a clinical kicking display. This time the impressive Galour Bofando exploded into the limelight with a devastating finish against Wendle Lewis. Right from the bell fight fans could see where this was heading but, such was the power with which Bofando dispatched his opponent, by the end every single person was up on their feet.
Despite smiling right up until the bell, the look of frustration and disappointment on Charlie Langdon’s face was clear for all to see as the referee called a stop to his fight with Ben Callum after just twenty-four seconds of the first round. Clearly annoyed that he wasn’t allowed to continue, it wasn’t long before Langdon was smiling again despite a fairly comprehensive defeat.
Both Huseyin Garabet and Cory Tait had a point to prove in their contest and, with both fighters looking confident and relaxed at the weigh-in and pre-fight, it was always going to be interesting to see how this one went. With both fighters happy to stand up and trade punches, it took until the second round before Tait managed to gain the upper hand forcing his opponent to submit with a rear-naked choke midway through the round.
His fight with Ashleigh Grimshaw was a no-lose situation for Dan Welsh who had taken the fight at the last-minute. With little time to prepare and against a superior opponent in Grimshaw, Welsh had only one option but to come out fighting. With the respect of everyone in the room, Welsh showed he wasn’t going to go down easy rocking Grimshaw into life. Snapping into gear quickly, Grimshaw soon grounded his opponent with some brutal punches before forcing Welsh into submitting with a clinical rear-naked choke.
Onto the UCMMA 28 main event and, with fan favourite Jamaine Facey taking on Jake Bostwick, there wasn’t a person in the room not expecting fireworks. What fight fans didn’t expect was the brutality with which Bostwick finished off Facey. Proceedings started promisingly as Facey took the fight to Bostwick with some grappling and a few knees but it wasn’t long before Bostwick floored Facey with a gargantuan hook finishing the job with some devastating hooks which left Facey unconscious on the cage floor and Bostwick heading for his first UCMMA title at 170 lbs.
