WSOF 2Last nights WSOF 2 provided fans some interesting MMA action on a Saturday night absent of the UFC. The second event from the upstart MMA promotion had the names and the intriguing match ups but did it have the results to make it the total package?

Lets find out……

Gesias Cavalcante vs Justin Gaethje: A red-hot prospect picked up by WSOF, Gaethje came out just as hard against Cavalcante as he has against all of his previous opponents. Working an aggressive game of dirty boxing and lunging strikes, Gaethje put JZ’s back on the fence and managed to open two massive cuts on the skull of JZ. While the Brazilian was game, the referee wasn’t and signaled for a doctor to look at the gushing wounds, which were deemed too severe to allow the fight to continue.
Justin Gaethje wins via 1st Round TKO (Cut)

Josh Burkman vs Aaron Simpson: Seemingly reinventing himself, Josh Burkman came out looking better than ever as he took on Power MMA’s Aaron Simpson. Showing great movement, timing, and composure in the pocket, Burkman moved around Simpson and picked his spots, landing everything he threw right on the chin. Simpson seemed off his game after a series of knees in the clinch and Burkman never allowed him to get his timing back, blasting him with straight shots and a final high knee that put him flat-out unconscious.
Josh Burkman wins via 1st Round KO (Knee)

Dave Branch vs Paulo Filho:
A fight that should never have been, Branch came in and easily dominated the former world-class fighter in Paulo Filho. While Filho did his part to make-weight and come to the cage, he did nothing to win the fight as Branch beat him standing, hit every takedown, and rained well over a hundred strikes on his opponent. While some referees would have stopped it before the bell, the beating went for the full fifteen minutes and showed a definitive end to Filho’s career as a top fighter.
Dave Branch wins via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)

Tyson Nam vs Marlon Moraes: An anticipated striking bout started slow and ended abruptly, as Tyson Nam faced WSOF veteran Marlon Moraes. Moraes was on point early with combination striking as he moved inside on Nam time and again, while Nam looked to line up his signature power punches. Nam found a bit of success with a few leg kicks to break his opponent’s rhythm but Moraes ended the match with a bang; Landing a head kick that dropped Nam. A handful of follow-up punches forced the stoppage, and while Nam protested, it was very much for his own good.
Marlon Moraes wins via 1st Round KO (head kick and punches)

Andrei Arlovski vs Anthony Johnson: A fight that would be literally impossible a few years ago, we were treated to a heavyweight tilt between Andrei Arlovski and former Welterweight Anthony Johnson. While Johnson was clearly physically outmatched in the back and forth fight, his skill set and toughness were on display in spades. Arlovski’s boxing looked crisp at many stages of the bout, but Johnson was able to put together the harder punches overall and controlled the pace of the fight a bit better than his hefty opponent. Despite Arlovski being saved by the bell at the end of the first round and suffering a broken jaw, he came on hard in the second and started to unravel Johnson as the former Welterweight’s gas tank depleted. Johnson came out hard for the third however and never let Arlovski back in the fight, taking a unanimous decision win in a career-defining moment.
Anthony Johnson wins via Unanimous Decision (29-28×3)
