Fan Favorite Shane Carwin Retires from MMA
Riddled by injuries and out of action since June of 2011, former UFC interim heavyweight champion Shane Carwin announced his retirement today. The news of the fan favorite stepping away from the sport shouldn’t come as a surprise but that doesn’t take away from the disappointment.
Fans last watched Shane Carwin compete was as a coach opposite Roy Nelson for the 16th season of the Ultimate Fighter. The season saw Carwin shine as a coach; while Nelson was borderline useless and fans were truly looking forward to their fight. Carwin defeated Nelson in the TUF 16 coaches challenge but was unable to try to duplicate that in the Finale due to a knee injury.
Shane Carwin ends his MMA career with a 12-2 record but having lost his last two fights. Along with the above mentioned knee troubles, Carwin has also has neck and back surgeries. Shane Carwin was known for his knockout power and quick finishes, but he leaves a legacy as a great role model and all-around good guy.
