In a night headlined by a welterweight showdown, fellow welterweight Brandon Thatch made the biggest splash of the night. Making his Octagon debut and riding an eight fight winning streak, Brandon Thatch made short work of his opponent Justin Edwards on the preliminary portion of the UFC Fight Night 27 fight card.
After helping launch FOX Sports 1 last weekend the UFC returns this week with a Wednesday card from the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. While it has some big shoes to fill, UFC Fight Night 27 has the match ups to delivery another great card.
With an impressive win over the accomplished veteran Mike Pyle at last weekend’s UFC Fight Night 26: Sonnen vs. Shogun, Matt Brown has shot himself into the top ten of the Welterweight Division. But is it too soon for the UFC veteran of 16 (11-5) UFC fights to be calling out the champ?
Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 27 is the start of a ridiculous week of UFC events and the fans will be treated to a slew of outstanding match-ups, and a main event a long time coming. Having suffered his first UFC loss out of the gate, Carlos Condit will look to rebound and redeem himself, taking on Danish slugger Martin Kampmann. We also have a division-shaping fight in our co-main spot, as Donald Cerrone takes on the surging Rafael Dos Anjos.
There isn’t a UFC event this weekend but the promotion has stayed busy cranking out fight announcements at an incredible rate. The UFC has events four events planned for August and the flood gates have opened upon these fight cards.
Saturday’s UFC 158 was filled with welterweight action, capped off by the UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre successfully defending his title against Nick Diaz. The fight card had a total of six welterweight bouts in all and the nights outcomes altered the direction of many of the division’s top fighters.
Well yet another year has come and gone, 2012 was an odd year for MMA but the year will not easily be forgotten. This year saw the UFC all over network TV, Bellator stumble its way into next year and smaller promotions like RFA, LFC and XFC make a name for themselves. Unfortunately it also saw Strikeforce take a nosedive and the UFC cancel an event for the first time.
The time has arrived, UFC 154 is upon use and hopefully the welterweight division can get back to some form of normalcy. Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre returns to action after a long absence to take on the interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit to unify the belts.

Due to a previously scheduled Arena Football game at the HP Pavilion, today’s UFC on FOX 7 weigh-ins were held less than a mile away at the California Theater. The small theater was completely filled with cheering fans and all the fighters they came to see made weight.
