JZ Cavalcante wants Josh Thomson in Debut, Thomson responds
In a recent interview with MMA Weekly, Brazilian lightweight Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante (15-3-1, 1NC) called out former Strikforce champ Josh Thomson(17-1, 1NC). Cavalcante recently signed a four-fight deal with Strikeforce and is coming off a split decision win over Katsunori Kikuno at Dream 15.
Cavalcante was originally in talks to debut against Thomson at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum but the fight was too close to his Dream fight so instead Thomson fought Pat Healy. Thomson went on to win that fight by third round submission and is now ready to take another step towards the title.
When contacted, Thomson responded to Cavalcante’s request with “it’s gonna happen, don’t know when but it’s gonna happen”.
Looking at the Strikeforce schedule and who is fighting and this fight has a very high likely hood of happening in either September or October. KJ Noons is likely facing Jorge Gurgel in August and Melendez is taking a break, as him and his girlfriend are expecting their first child in late 2010.
A Cavalcante vs. Thomson fight would be very entertaining and Strikeforce could actually use the fight as a number one contender fight while Melendez is spending time with his newborn.
With the addition of Cavalcante, Strikeforce now has a very formidable lightweight division with Cavalcante, Josh Thomson, KJ Noons and champ Gilbert Melendez. Thomson himself called it “the best lightweight division in the world”, though it’s probably still second behind the UFC.
