Roy Nelson Stuck in Contract Issues
Fans of “Big Country” Roy Nelson might have to wait a long time to him fight in the UFC again. According to UFC president Dana White, Nelson is currently contractually bound to another fight promotion believed to be Square Ring Promotions.
Nelson had fought in March of 2009 for the promotion and was defeated by former UFC heavyweight contender Jeff Monson via unanimous decision. Nelson then went on to participate in the tenth season of The Ultimate fighter, which he defeated Brendan Schaub to win a six figure contract.
In August of 2009 Square Ring Promotions filed suit against Zuffa and Nelson for the UFC allegedly interfering with the contractual relationship, according to MMAConvert. The contract that Nelson signed with Square Ring Promotions to fight on their card appears to be coming back to haunt him nearly a year later.
White told MMAJunkie last night that “Roy Nelson is involved in a bad contract”, and it seems bad enough to keep him out of action for a long time.
Nelson was originally scheduled to fight Shane Carwin in the co-main event of UFC 125 on January 1, 2011. Carwin pulled out of the fight to have back surgery and after replacement rumors including Mirko Cro Cop, Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar never materialized, Nelson was also removed from the card.
Nelson now finds himself in limbo, unable to fight and make money yet having to pay lawyers to clear things up so he can get back to fighting.
