The WEC 53 Undercard Steals the Show
December 16, 2010 marked the last event for the WEC. The entire card was stacked from top to bottom with exciting matchups to end the promotion with the best fights possible.
Not only did the show live up to the hype, it was the undercard that really shined. Despite the great performances by Dominick Cruz and Anthony Pettis, who both walked out of the cage as the last men to hold their respective belts, it isn’t often that the bottom half of the card puts on the kind of show as seen in Glendale last night.
The night’s undercard featured seven bouts; of those seven, only two went the distance. The rest of the fights all ended in the first round. To start things off, Renan Barao submitted Chris Cariaso with a Rear Naked Choke. Next up, Yuri Alcantara knocked out Ricardo Lamas in a bout that kept fans on their feet from the moment the opening bell rang. Then came Danny Castillo’s stunning knockout of Will Kerr, which many thought would look like a grappling contest, but Castillo’s left hand had other plans once the fight hit the mat. The final knockout of the night came at the expense of Ken Stone, courtesy of a spine tingling slam by Eddie Wineland. The final first round finish of the undercard was a matchup between Shane Roller and Jamie Varner. Roller’s superior grappling was too much for Varner, who was submitted by Rear Naked Choke in his final WEC bout.
WEC 53 lived up to the hype that was behind it. The card featured everything a fan could ask for. From knockouts and submissions, to the crowning of a new champion, there isn’t one fan disappointed with their final night inside the blue cage.
