Pat Barry and Cheick Kongo to meet at UFC on Versus 4
MMA Junkie recently reported the first bout to be scheduled for UFC on Versus 4 this June. Heavyweight contender Cheick Kongo (15-6-2) will make his return the The Octagon after an eight-month absence and will square off against former K-1 kickboxer Pat “HD” Barry (6-2). While the card is scheduled to take place on June 26th, no city or venue has been locked down to host the event.
Kongo returns to action after a long layoff due to an injury sustained during training. In his last fight, Kongo and Travis Browne fought to a draw after Kongo was deducted a point after repeatedly grabbing Browne’s shorts. This draw slowed down his momentum after a submission (strikes) victory over Paul Buetello following back-to-back losses for the first time in his career.
Barry is coming off an impressive victory over Joey Beltran at UFC: Fight for the Troops 2 back in January. In his previous bout, he was heavily criticized for “showing too much respect” to his idol, “Cro Cop”, which resulted in him being choked out in the third round. In all actuality, Barry revealed that he had broken his hand and his foot in the first round and thus could not attack as heavily as originally planned.
A win for Kongo will help him get back on the positive side of things and Barry will try to finally silence the critics once and for all.
It has not yet been released as to whether Barry vs. Kongo will be part of the main card to be broadcast on Versus or part of the preliminary portion of the card possibly aired on Facebook.
