Edgar vs. Maynard 3 Postponed, Fight Card Shuffled
Bad News all round today as the UFC lost its main event for UFC 130, which takes place later this month. Both the lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and the challenger Gray Maynard are reportedly injured and their fight has been postponed.
The bout was to be their third meeting overall and an immediate rematch from January’s UFC 125 title fight that ended in a draw. Maynard won the first meeting back in 2008 and when the two meet again it looked as if Maynard would win the second fight as well. Edgar showed the heart of a champion to recovered from a disastrous opening round and force a five round draw.
No timetable has been set for when Edgar vs. Maynard III will now take place but the postponement is likely to push back the title shot that Anthony Pettis was to get after winning the WEC lightweight belt at WEC 53 in December. Pettis will face Clay Guida at the TUF 13 Finale on June 4th and should he win that fight he’ll have to choose to wait or fight once again.
In losing the cards main event the UFC was forced to shuffle things around up and down the fight card.
Replacing Edgar vs. Maynard in the main event slot will now be former UFC light heavyweight champ Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Matt “The Hammer” Hamill. The heavyweight bout between former heavyweight champ Frank Mir and Roy Nelson will now serve as the events co-main event.
Moving up from the Spike TV prelims to the main Pay-Per-View card will be the Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story welterweight clash. Replacing that fight on Spike TV will be season three Ultimate Fighter winner Kendall Grove as he welcomes Tim Boetsch to the middleweight division.
UFC 130: Rampage vs. Hamill happens May 28th from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
