UFC 140 will be headlined by Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida
The days WTF moment today goes to Dana White and the UFC as the Ultimate Fighting Championships President announced (via Twitter) that UFC 140 in Toronto would be headlined by Jon Jones and Lyoto Machida. The light heavyweight champion will be making his second title defense not against Rashad Evans but instead he’ll face the 1-2 over his last three fights, Machida.
Yesterday rumors began to swirl that Jones and Evans would settle their grudge match atop the UFC 140 card, but they were quickly and adamantly shot down by White. “For the media guys who live on some other planet and didn’t know Rashad Evans has pins in his thumb and is out for a while!!!!” tweeted White.
Jones (14-1) is coming off his first title defense against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at last month’s UFC 135, winning in the fourth round via rear naked choke. Since coming into the UFC Jones has looked impressive and quickly rose to the top of the division. The lone blemish on his record is a disqualification loss to Matt Hamill in his fourth UFC fight, but other than that he’s been perfect.
The former UFC light heavyweight champion, Machida (17-2) got back into the win column in April when he knocked out the legend Randy Couture at UFC 129. Machida had lost for the first two times in his career before that, losing the title to Mauricio Rua at UFC 113 and then dropping a split decision to Jackson at UFC 123.
The announcement comes as a surprise to most but that shouldn’t over shadow the prospects of this fight and the unique striking these two can bring to the Octagon.
