Mac Danzig Drops Joe Stevenson at UFC 124
In a battle of The Ultimate Fighter reality TV show alums, Season 6 winner Mac Danzig (20-8-1 MMA, 4-4 UFC) made quick work of Season 2 winner Joe “Daddy” Stevenson (31-12 MMA, 8-6 UFC) at UFC 124. The bout was billed as a very evenly matched bout between two outstanding grapplers, however the fight never made it to the ground.
The fighters met each other in the center of the ring and looked to impose their game plan on one another. Stevenson looked for a home for his overhand right while Danzig landed a few kicks to the leg of Stevenson. Stevenson continued to stay aggressive and come forward, which would prove to be costly for Stevenson.
As Joe “Daddy” was coming forward, he coiled up to throw a huge left uppercut, at the same time Danzig was moving backward and launched a perfectly timed counter left hook that hit Stevenson on the jaw. Stevenson immediately fell to the ground face first. Danzig jumped on Stevenson and landed a pair of hammer-fists before referee Dan Miraggliotta rushed in to protect the defenseless Stevenson and stop the fight.
Danzig’s big left hand earned him an extra $100,000 as the UFC awarded him with the “Knockout of the Night”. The win for Danzig places him in the mix of the UFC Lightweight division. For Stevenson, the loss is the second in a row. While early speculation is that Stevenson will still remain in the UFC, a third in a row may be the end of the line for the Greg Jackson fighter.
