If you stayed up late last night / early this morning to watch DREAM 17 you saw another solid yet long Japanese Mixed Martial Arts event. The card saw the opening round of the eight man bantamweight tournament along with many of the top JMMA competitors.

Jamie Varner vs. Shinya Aoki Rumored for Dream 17

News out of Jamie Varner’s management team yesterday had Varner fighting Shinya Aoki at Dream 17 on May 29th in Japan. The release though seems a bit pre-mature as Varner’s camp and Aoki’s camp still have details that need to be hammered out.

Second Tier MMA by Committee?

Zuffa has done its best Pacman impersonation, gobbling up Pride, WFA, IFL, WEC and now Strikeforce, leaving no clear second organization.  I know Mark Pavelich would have you believe MFC is number 2 but the truth is it’s a committee effort to supply the needed fighters to move onto the biggest stages, as well as a home for those on their way down the ladder.

Dream 17 Bantamweight Grand Prix Match-ups Announced

Dream 17 features the first two rounds of their Bantamweight Tournament in what they hope will be an effort to raise money for relief for Japan from the Earthquake and subsequent tsunami that caused massive damage to Japan.  So far only the Bantamweight matches have been announced.
