2011 Year End Report: The Welterweight Division

The welterweight division has long been the middle road of MMA; three divisions before it and three after it. A weight class that has given fans and the sport, legends, epic battles and examples of what training, dedication and tenacity can do for an individual. When those skills become so dominant you get the current UFC welterweight champion GSP* who has held the belt since April 2008.

As the current Zuffa roster changes with additions and deletions of fighters, the one time big names (Arlovski, Pulver, Henderson) have gone on to fight for smaller promotions and find success there. Right now there are men under contract who have underperformed or just cannot hang with the world-class level most of the fighters in the UFC bring into the octagon. Instead of subjecting those to a smaller pay for lesser known venues, here are a few examples of fighters that could go to Strikeforce and find success while helping re-build the promotion as its own force.

The fighters of Sundays exciting UFC on Versus 5 events learned of their medical fate today from the Wisconsin’s Department of Safety and Professional Services. 13 of the 24 fighters on the card appeared on the medical report, receiving either a 30-day medical rest period or an indefinite suspension.

A fighter’s nickname sometimes can be helpful or mocking towards their career. Karo Parysian has seemed to lose “Heat” over the years, Chuck Liddell was the one becoming “The Iceman” as he was stiff from knockouts and Diego Sanchez, who knows – “Dirty” always seemed better than the nightmare or dream or vision or whatever he is calling himself this week.

When I think of the most entertaining cards top to bottom so far this year UFC Live 4: Kongo vs. Barry and now UFC Live 5: Hardy vs. Lytle come to mind. These Versus (NBC Sports Network)/ Facebook cards are on a hot streak reminiscent of those good old WEC cards we became accustomed to on those Thursday nights. Last night we saw some old WEC mainstays like Ben Henderson, Joseph Benavidez and Donald Cerrone all collect victories in entertaining fashion.

The Winner and Losers from UFC on Versus 5

UFC on Versus 5 delivered in so many ways from the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, WI. A true sportsman walked away with the win, WEC veterans proved that they do belong in the big leagues and overall – smaller weight classes always come through when it’s go time. In everything though, there are winners and losers, here is the breakdown from last night’s event and the ramifications thereof.
