Diego Sanchez Leaving Lightweight

Diego Sanchez is taking his “YES” act back on tour in the Welterweight division. Today via twitter Sanchez annouced that he’ll be moving back to the division he had spent most of his UFC career at. In announcing his return he also decided to call out Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck who are his only teo losses at 170lbs.

“YES IM GOING BACK TO WELTERWEIGHT IM LOVING MY NEW DIET.I WANT KOS OR FITCH BUT ANY TOP GUY WILL DO JUST WANT TO GIVE U FANS THE BEST FIGHT”

Sanchez fought BJ Penn back at UFC 107 in December for the Lightweight title where he lost by doctor stoppage. Penn beat up Sanchez in every round and when a massive cut was opened up on Sanchez’s forehead due to a kick by Penn the fight ended. that was a month ago and Sanchez must have realized he could never beat Penn so lets move back to Welterweight and see what happens. I would have liked him to fight Kenny Florian at Lightweight before he decided to run back to Welterweight but maybe he didn’t want to chance it. Sanchez at Lightweight looked ripped and in the best condition we’ve seen him in the UFC. Hopefully his “I’m loving my new diet” means that when he adds back that 15 pounds it will be all muscle and he’ll come back in better shape then when he left the division.

I’m not fully into the move back to Welterweight but there is some interesting match up for Sanchez. Before any rematch with Koscheck or Fitch, Sanchez should have to fight someone else below the top level guys first. Fighters like Paul Daley, Anthony Johnson, Martin Kampmann, Carlos Condit, Dong Hyum Kim would be a good start. Koscheck is facing Paul Daley at UFC 113 in montreal and Anthony Johnson is facing John Howard at UFC on Versus 1 so they are rulled out. Martin Kampmann will be fighting Ben Saunders at UFC 111 so they are ruled out as well. That leaves us with Carlos Condit (24-5) and Dong Hyum Kim (12-0-1) out of the list. Condit has the higher name value and he last fought in September so they make a good fit for Sanchez’s return.

In a side note, Sanchez yesterday also called out Nate Diaz who is also moving up to Welterweight from Lightweight, but Diaz is rumored to be fighting Rory MacDonald at UFC 111.

“@NateDiaz209 i agree you go robbed… i hear your going up too 170 too i would love to welcome you to welterweight lets make it happen.”
