Bellator 40 Locks up Lightweight and Welterweight Finals
The 40th Bellator event is now in the books and the season four finals for both the lightweight and welterweight divisions are all set. Following last week’s Bellator 39 where lightweight Patricky Freire and welterweight Rick Hawn punched their ticket to the tournament finals, Michael Chandler and Jay Hieron joined them with win last night at Bellator 40.
Chandler took on Lloyd Woodard in semifinal action and the wrestler was just too much as Chandler was able to take Woodard down as will. Though his didn’t put down a beating on Woodard, the majority of the first and third rounds were spent with Chandler in top control. Woodard had his shot against Chandler in the second nearly securing a rear naked choke and finishing the round in full mount. Chandler took the fight via unanimous decision and advances to face Patricky Freire in the finals.
Jay Hieron faced Brent Weedman in the welterweight semifinal and like the lightweight bout; it was the wrestling that was the difference in the fight. The fight was much closer than the 29-28 score given on all three judges’ scorecards that gave it in favor of the extreme Couture trained Hieron. Up next for Hieron will be a fight against Rick Hawn in the welterweight tournament finals, pitting raw talent against grizzled veteran.
The winners of the season four tournaments will be crowned the tournament winner but more importantly they will earn a shot at the division’s current champion. Bellator 40 was held at the First Council Casino in Newkirk, Oklahoma and also featured a non title bout between the Bellator welterweight champ Ben Askren against Nick Thompson as the nights main event.
