Drive In Griffin v Rua Forrest Griffin Looks to Repeat Against Shogun Rua At UFC Rio

The last time Forrest Griffin (18-6) faced Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (19-5) it was the UFC debut for the former PRIDE Champion. Griffin welcomed Rua to the octagon with a third round submission at UFC 76 in 2007, earning himself a title shot against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson where he won a unanimous decision to become the UFC light heavyweight champion.

The Ultimate Fighter season one winner will look to capture lightning in a bottle once more and earn a double repeat against Rua at UFC Rio (UFC 134) on August 27 from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The bout was first reported by and later confirmed by

Rua followed the loss to griffin with a 16 month layoff recovering from knee surgery. He would bounce back after the injury to eventually capture the UFC light heavyweight championship by defeating Lyoto Machida at UFC 113 via first round knockout. Rua most recently lost his title to Jon Jones at UFC 128 and will be looking to get back on track, while avenging his loss to Griffin.

With the event being in Brazil, Rua will be fighting in his home country for the first time since 2003 where he defeated Evangelista Santos in Rio de Janeiro. It will also mark the second trip by the UFC to Brazil, the first being at UFC 17.5 back in 1998.

Both former UFC light heavyweight champions are obviously different fighters now than they were nearly four years ago but fans should expect another great battle between these two fighters come August 27.
