Kongo Comes Back From the Dead, KO’s Barry

| June 27, 2011 | Reply

UFC Heavyweight Cheick Kongo scored a comeback in Pittsburgh tonight that people will be talking about for years. Barry seemed to be holding his own early, absorbing some heavy legs kicks from Kongo before all hell broke loose. Barry caught Kongo with a huge knock at around the two-minute marker that looked to be the beginning of the end for Kongo. Not only was Kongo able to absorb more punishment, he would be able to knockout Barry in spectacular fashion earning himself a hefty Knockout of the Night bonus check and most likely big time water cooler status around the world this morning.

Veteran referee Dan Miragliotta was all over the action, nearly stopping the fight at one point but decided to let the bout continue when he saw Kongo grabbing Barry. After a pretty rough night for referee Chip Snider, Miragliotta showed why he’s mainstay in the UFC.

Pat Barry admitted at the post fight presser that he thought for a split second it was indeed all over. It’s a game of split second decisions for all three men involved and that split second blunder on Barry’s part may have caused him to leave just a window of vulnerability for a wobbled Kongo to land the kill shot. Almost as surprising as Kongo’s comeback (key word being almost) is that this was the UFC Heavyweight striker’s first Knockout of the Night honor in 14 appearances for the big show.

For an event marred with plenty of scandal leading up to Fight Night its refreshing to see that the late Main Event replacement emerged as one for the MMA history books.
