Mike Kyle vs. Gegard Mousasi Likely For Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey
With Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal in limbo right now pending some form of suspension following his positive test for steroids, the Strikeforce light heavyweight division is moving on. Mike Kyle announced today via his Twitter account that he’s fighting on March 3rd against former champion Gegard Mousasi.
“It’s on March 3 Ohio baby Mak Kyle and Mousasi, beast mode,” tweeted Kyle.
Kyle and Mousasi were supposed to fight on the Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley card but Kyle withdrew from the fight due to a broken hand and Keith Jardine stepped in on short notice.
The bout has not been made official by Strikeforce but the promotion has been in the process of filling that card up. Strikeforce is currently without a light heavyweight title after Dan Henderson moved back to the UFC, but this bout doesn’t appear to be for the vacant belt. That being said, the winner of this contest would more than likely earn themselves a shot at the vacant title later on in the year.
Kyle (19-8-1, 1nc) is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Marcos Rogerio de Lima in September at light heavyweight after suffering a loss to Antonio Silva in a heavyweight bout nine months earlier. Kyle has bounced around between light heavy and heavyweight recently but his last two defeats have come at heavyweight, while winning the King of the Cage and XMMA 205 lbs. championships in between those losses.
Mousasi (32-3-2) is coming off a unanimous decision win over Ovince St-Pruex in December which put him in line to regain the Strikeforce light heavyweight title he lost to Lawal in April of 2010. Since that defeat Mousasi has four wins and one no contest between Strikeforce and DREAM. One of those wins with DREAM earned him their light heavyweight championship to go along with the middleweight championship he won in 2008.
Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey will take place at the Nationwide Arena, Columbus, Ohio.
