The Mexicutioner Welcomes Lavar Johnson to the UFC
Over the past couple months, many of Strikeforce’s fighters have crossed over and competed in the UFC Octagon. At tonight’s UFC on FOX 2, “Big” Lavar Johnson (15-5) will become the next Strikeforce fighter to cross over into the UFC. Waiting for him across the cage will be Joey “The Mexicutioner” Beltran (13-6), who has been on a rough patch lately having gone 1-3 in his last four fights. Johnson, too, has hit a rough patch of his own in losing back-to-back fights, both by way of submission. Fortunately for Johnson, Beltran only has one victory by way of submission so he shouldn’t have to worry about being submitted this time around.
What he does have to worry about, however, is The Mexicutioner’s ability to take punishment and keep moving forward. In nineteen career fights, Beltran has yet to be knocked out. When you take into consideration that he’s taken shots from Pat Barry, Matt Mitrione and Houston Alexander, this feat is pretty impressive. Although Johnson has never faced the level of talent that Beltran has, to his credit, he has only been stopped via TKO one time throughout his career.
Judging from the fighters’ past bouts, you can surely expect a lot of punches with a lot of power behind them to be thrown all night long. Both men have a combined twenty-four knockout victories between them and Johnson has yet to make it to the judges’ score cards. With Beltran’s ability to take a punch, and Johnson’s fondness of throwing them, this could be a very interesting fight. You can expect both men to want to stand and bang until one of them hits the canvas.
If Lavar Johnson can get past Joey Beltran, he will bring exciting new potential match ups to the UFC’s Heavyweight Division. Although Beltran’s record isn’t the most impressive since signing with the UFC (3-3) he definitely puts on a show every time he comes out, and is one of the nicest guys outside of the cage. However, another loss for him may very well earn him his walking papers from Joe Silva.
