Carlos Condit vs. Nick Diaz 2 all but Official (Update)

| February 7, 2012 | Reply

Guess Nick Diaz isn’t stepping away from MMA after all. Less than a week after Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz went five rounds to crown an interim welterweight champion at UFC 143, they have agreed to do it again. What started as a rumor was quickly confirmed by UFC President Dana White tonight, “The rumor is true, Carlos did accept the fight today and Carlos is coming on Friday,” tweeted White.

Condit’s manager Malki Kawa also tweeted, “Well, the powers to be just called. @CarlosCondit and myself will be in Vegas and hope to have an announcement on Fri.”

Condit defeated Diaz by unanimous decision (48-47, 49-46, 49-46) to become the UFC interim welterweight champion. While the new champ was celebrating, his opponent was griping over leg kicks and running away. The post fight in ring interview from Diaz helped spark a social media blitz along fans on both sides of the decision, fueling fire for a rematch.

With current welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre on the shelf for several more months, Condit was asked after the fight if he’d wait for GSP or defend the interim belt. He didn’t give an answer at the time, but come this Friday it should become official, he’s defending his belt.

[Update] If he is defending his belt it will not be against Nick Diaz. Today the NSAC announced the Diaz had failed the UFC 143 drug test for marijuana metabolites (THC). No punishment was was given at the time but Keith Kizer did say that “a complaint for disciplinary action against Mr. Diaz has been filed.”
