UFC on FOX 4 Medical Suspensions

The California State Athletic Commission handed out the medical suspensions from Saturday’s UFC on FOX 4 with 11 of the participants receiving at least 45 days. Three of four light-heavyweight headliners got suspensions as well as three others receiving lengthy suspensions that could end up being 180 days.

Of the four light heavyweights only Lyoto Machida, who earned the light heavyweight title shot with a win over Ryan Bader in the UFC on FOX 4 co-main event, escaped suspension. Mauricio Rua, Brandon Vera and Ryan Bader were not so lucky though and will have to hold of their exercise programs here for the time being. Each received a 45 day suspension for precautionary reasons but Vera also drew a 60-day term for a cut below his eye.

Machida “impressed” with his 2nd rd. KO over Bader and will face the winner of next month’s light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Dan Henderson at UFC 151. Rua needed four rounds to earn the TKO victory over Vera and looked tired early in the fight before scoring the win.

Main card fighters Mike Swick and Jamie Varner, along with preliminary fighter Oli Thompson each received 180 day suspensions but that can be reduced once cleared by a physician. Swick was also given a 60 day suspension with no contact due to a cut on his right eyelid.

The eye poke that Wagner Prado suffered in his preliminary bout with Phil Davis resulted in a no-contest but Prado was also indefinitely suspended pending clearance from an ophthalmologist.
