The night was supposed to be concluded with a fight of the night bout between Gray Maynard and Clay Guida, but UFC on FX 4 ended with anything but that. Guida’s game plan appeared to involve moving even more than normal, including moving backwards more than forwards. The strategy would frustrate Maynard as the fight entered the extended rounds and he couldn’t contain his emotions.
It’s Friday night and the weekend is locked and loaded with MMA action, starting with the UFC on FX 4 from Atlantic City, New Jersey. This free card is headlined by a lightweight five round non-title main event between Clay Guida and Gray Maynard in a battle to stay above water in the 155 pound division.
The fighters for tomorrows UFC on FX 4 took to the scale tonight inside the same venue they will be fighting tomorrow and all but one of the 24 fighters successfully made weight. Preliminary card fighter C.J. Keith weighed in at 157 pounds for his lightweight bout with Ramsey Nijem and will be fined a hefty 20% of his purse.
When you’re in the UFC, you’re at the top level of Mixed Martial Arts. However, with all the events taking place, and all the fighters under contract, a couple bad performances can be all it takes to lose that spot and be back on the circuit looking for fights in smaller organizations trying to earn your way back. With all the complaining about Saturdays UFC 147 let’s not forget about Friday’s UFC on FX 4: Maynard vs. Guida from the Revel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Coming off last month’s UFC on FOX event, it’s the promotions second trip to the state of New Jersey in less than two months.
For those of us skipping the abysmal UFC 147 card, we have an excellent and free card taking place at the UFC on FX 4 that should prove to be action-packed. In our main event, Gray Maynard will look to rebound from the first loss of his career as he faces lightweight perma-contender Clay Guida in an epic bout. With an emphasis on the lower weight classes for this card, we’re sure to see some fast and fierce battles, and there’s plenty of opportunity to make some quick cash here.
Even without an athletic commission in Brazil the UFC handed down medical suspensions on the fighters following UFC Rio (UFC 134). 16 fighters or two-thirds of the entire card were suspended, ranging anywhere from 7 days mandatory rest to 180 days pending doctor’s clearance.
In one of the best shown Spike TV fights, and sadly one of the last, Rousimar Palhares improved his record in unusual fashion to 13-3 at UFC Rio. Palhares is a definite middleweight contender and without a few silly mistakes would be a lot closer to a shot at the title, but for now he’s still one or two fights away. The Bisping vs. Miller Loser, or the Leben vs. Munoz winner would both be perfect challenger eliminator fight.
