UFC on Fuel TV 8: Silva, Stann & Hunt Save the night

UFC on FUEL TV 8 Wanderlei SilvaHeading into the final two fights of last night’s slow moving UFC on FUEL TV 8, the event looked destined to be a flop. Eight consecutive decisions including 4 split decisions had the fans inside the Saitama Super Arena and watching at home extremely restless. UFC President Dana White said it best when he tweeted “Next two fights hopefully save the night. BRUTAL!”

Luckily for all, that is exactly what happened!

In the UFC on FUEL TV 8 co-main event, Heavyweights Stefan Struve and Mark Hunt broke the string of decisions with an entertaining mix of striking and grappling. Many though if the fight went to the ground that Struve would be able to submit Hunt with ease. The “Super Samoan” showed some improved submission defense to escape the lanky arms and legs of Struve. When the fight was standing it was Hunt who had the advantage and despite the large height difference he consistently found a home for his hands on the jaw of Struve. That jaw would be what ended the fight after a bomb from Hunt clipped the jaw of Struve and sent him crashing to the canvas. Struve was not knocked out though he made no attempt to get back to his feet. That punch from Hunt had broken his jaw and the fight was over. The win gave Hunt four in a row inside the Octagon while the jaw breaker earned him the “Knockout of the Night”.

The main event put a much-needed exclamation point on the night as Wanderlei Silva and Brian Stann put on a war. Minutes into the fight it had already un-officially won “Fight of the Night” and the only thing left was to sit back and watch the fireworks. The two light heavyweights went toe to toe for almost two rounds and as the dust settled from all the fireworks it was Silva who would get his hand lifted in victory. The former Pride star took a page from the past and just out slugged and outlasted Stann in an instant classic of a fight. Not only would the two earn “Fight of the Night” honors but Silva would also grab the night’s second “Knockout of the Night” bonus as well.

The winners of the UFC on FUEL TV 8 fight night bonuses each received an extra $50k on top of their contracted show / win money.

Knockout of the Night: Mark Hunt & Wanderlei Silva

Fight in the Night: Wanderlei Silva vs. Brian Stann

Since there was no submissions record on the UFC on FUEL TV 8 fight card, there obviously was no “Submission of the Night” bonus handed out. Though at times I think the fans could be seem tapping out a couple of times.
