UFC 107 Recap

ufc 107Man what a great night of fights, I don’t think there was one bad fight that we saw on the PPV. I’d like to start off by thanking Ricky’s sports bar for hosting a great UFC party and also for letting me hang out. These guys know how to do it, which is probably why they are the #2 sports bar in America. Ricky’s does this for every UFC PPV so if your in the area check it out. They are located in San Leandro at 15028 Hesperian Blvd. (510) 352-0200.

The night started out with the Stefan Struve vs. Paul Buentello fight and this fight was pretty entertaining with alot of back and forth action. They split the first two rounds so the first came down to the last round where Buentello looked tired and Struve used his length to keep the distance. The round was much slower then the first two but Struve did enough to win the round. The judges has the fight 29-28, 29-28 & 28-28 for the anomaly that is a majority decision.

Next up was what I and many other figures would be the fight of the night in Kenny Florian vs. Clay Guida. We didn’t get the fight of the night instead we got a great effect by Florian who showed much improved boxing and head movement. The first round was quick paced but by the end of the round Guida was bloodied by a Florian elbow. Second round was a continuation of the first until Guida gets caught by a crushing right hand and goes down. Florian immediately jumps on Guida and works to finish the fight which he does by rear naked choke. The changing of camps worked well for Florian showing great boxing, head movement and angles.

Fight #3 of the night was Jon Fitch vs. Mike Pierce and while the outcome was exactly what I thought it was more entertaining then what I figured. Fitch controlled the fight for the majority of the fifteen minutes but Pierce put up a good fight showing alot of heart. Fitch used a combination of solid wrestling and timely striking to earn the unanimous decision 29-28 on all three judges.

The co-main event tonight was Frank Mir vs. Cheick Kongo and there was alot of bad blood between the two. On paper this fight looked really lopsided in favor of the ground game of Frank Mir. The fight starts with Mir looking to stand with Kongo and shows some nice angles catching Kongo with a clean overhand right that drops him. Mir pounces on Kongo quickly sinking in a rear naked choke to finish the fight in round one. Mir looked in real good shape coming in at a solid 265lbs and has really improved his striking.

Now to the main event of the night the UFC Lightweight champ BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez. Round one starts with a bang and the fight almost ends with Penn rocking Sanchez dropping him to the canvas. Sanchez showed the heart we all knew he had getting back up to finish the round. Sanchez came out in round two and was clearly affected by the damage he took in round one. Penn literally picked Sanchez apart in rounds 2 – 4 easily defending any take down Sanchez tried. In the fifth round Penn turned up the pressure forcing Sanchez to retreat and leaving him wide open for the kick Penn landed to Sanchez’s forehead opening a deep cut. The ref stopped the fight to have that hole in the forehead of Sanchez looked at and the Doctor said NO MORE. Penn look phenomenalin the fight and didn’t have a mark on him after a 25 minute fight. Hard to question Penn’s cardio after his last two fights, so whats next for him???20091212104856_img_6256

The nights award winners each got $65,000 on top of their show/win pay.

Fight of the Night— Alan Belcher vs. Wilson Gouveia
Knockout of the Night — TJ Grant
Submission of the Night —DaMarques Johnson

I went an insane 10-1 when my picks pushing me up to 78-48-1 overall since UFC 100 and making up for those 3 losing events. The night was filled with great fights and closed out the 2009 year nicely, too bad 2010 is starting of with a UFC 108 fight card that is so bad.

In closing what do you think is next for BJ Penn in the Lightweight division? Also now that Diego Sanchez and Kenny Florian each lost their title chances can we finally get a rematch of the TUF season one Finale?

I’m loving the LW division right now, I’m thinking Maynard gets a shot at BJ if he wins convincingly against Diaz and KenFlo will get a fight against Frankie Edgar to see who is next in line. The HW division is crazy right now, Mir is right back in the picture and should get the winner of Cain v. Big Nog…What a freakin great night of fights, best since 100!!
