Sean Sherk vs. Clay Guida in the works (Update)
A fight between former lightweight champion Sean Sherk and Ultra fan favorite Clay Guida is in the works for March 21 on the UFC’s Ultimate Fight Night 21 card in Denver. Though bout agreements have not yet been signed it looks like that will happen soon and made official. This will be a very exciting and entertaining fight between two talented wrestlers with motors that never quite. I’m really looking forward to this fight and will already call my shot of this being fight of the night. With both being strong wrestlers I think the two will likely stand in front of each other and bang. Sherk is the better wrestler but Guida will not let him lay and pray in top position, so expect a toe to toe battle for 15 minutes.
Sherk (37-4-1, 7-4 UFC), was expected to face Rafaello Oliveira at UFC 108, but was promoted to the main card to fight Jim Miller when Tyson Griffin pulled out due to Injury. Sherk then suffered a cut above his right eye requiring several stitches and had to pull out of the fight. He trains at Minnesota Martial Arts Academy alongside current UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. Prior to the upset loss to Edgar at UFC 98, his only career losses were to former welterweight champion Matt Hughes, current welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre and current lightweight champ BJ Penn.
Guida (25-11, 5-5 UFC), has lost his last two fights inside the octagon against Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez. The former Strikeforce Lightweight champ had run off three wins in a row before the back to back loses. Guida has fought a long list a top Lightweights including Josh Thomson, Gilbert Milendez, Rogar Huerta, Tyson Griffin and Nate Diaz. The native of Round Lake, Illinois Guida is currently training out of Greg Jackson’s camp in Albuquerque, N.M.
[Updated] Sean Sherk has rejected the proposed fight with Clay Guida for an undisclosed reason. MMAjunkieis reporting that Shannon Gugerty (12-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) has agreed to step in for “The Muscle Shark” and face Guida. My guess is that Sherk didn’t like the match upand decided not to sign the agreement. This is very unfortunate, I was looking forward to the Guida vs. Sherk match up and a Guida vs. Gugerty fight has no appeal.
