Jon Jones Injured, Rashad Evans To Face Phil Davis At UFC 133

The UFC light heavyweight belt will once again sit on the shelf as the champion recovers from an injury. Newly crown champion Jon “Bones” Jones (13-1) apparently tore a ligament in his right-hand during his title fight against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128.

Jones was schedule to make his first title defense against his former Greg Jackson teammate Rashad Evans (15-1-1) who was the original opponent schedule to face Rua at UFC 128. Jones stepped in for his then teammate and dominated Rua for three rounds before the fight was stopped by technical knockout.

Evans hasn’t fought since UFC 114 last May where he won a unanimous decision over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and once again must wait for his shot at the light heavyweight title. Even though Jones is injured, Evans is not waiting around as Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press’ reported that Evans will face Phil Davis (9-0) at UFC 133, rumored to be August 6th.

Davis holds impressive wins over Brian Stann, Alexander Gustafsson, Rodney Wallace and Tim Boetsch in the UFC and is a former NCAA Division I national wrestling champion. He most recently defeated Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by unanimous decision in March.

With Evans holding the #1 light heavyweight contenders spot and Davis’ rising star status it’s likely this fight will end up headlining the UFC 133 card that also features Rich Franklin vs.  Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Vitor Belfort vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama
