| August 31, 2011 | Reply

The highly anticipated fifth season from the Bellator Fighting Championship gets underway on September 10th with Bellator 49. The newest season will feature four tournaments taking place in the Bantamweight, Welterweight, middleweight and heavyweight divisions. The quarterfinal rounds for all four tournaments will take place over between Bellator 49 and Bellator 52; here is a preview of season five.

It all gets started at Bellator 49 with eight welterweights vying for the chance at the Bellator welterweight championship. The current champion in the division is Ben Askren but he’ll likely be defending that title at some point during the season. The eight fighters competing in the fourth welterweight tournament that Bellator has held are:

Steve Carl vs. Douglas Lima

Luis Santos vs. Dan Hornbuckle

Ben Saunders vs. Chris Cisneros

Chris Lozano vs. Brent Weedman

Bellator 50 will get the third ever middleweight tournament underway as eight 185ers look to earn a shot against Hector Lombard and his middleweight title. Lombard defended his title in season three at Bellator 34, defeating Alexander Shelmenko by unanimous decision. The eight fighters looking for a spot in Lombard’s second title defense are:

Vitor Vianna vs. Sam Alvey

Bryan Baker vs. Jared hess

Alexander Shlemenko vs. Zelg Galesic

Brian Rogers vs. Victor O’Donnell

It’s the bantamweights turn at Bellator 51 and it’s this tournament field that has the fans talking. Zach Mackovsky is the current bantamweight champion, but it’s the featherweight champion Joe Warren who’s looking to become the promotions first two division champion. The complete eight man bantamweight field is as follows:

Joe Warren vs. Alexis Vila

Ed West vs. Luis Nogueira

Wilson Reis vs. Eduardo Dantas

Chase Beebe vs. Marcos Galvao

[Updated] Bellator 52 is home for the heavyweight tournament quarterfinals and the last of the eight man fields to be completed. The now finalized tournament field of a few familiar faces to Bellator, along with same that will be making their promotional debut. The current heavyweight champion, Cole Konrad will be waiting at the end of the line for the winner. Here are the heavyweight match ups for the quarterfinal round:

Abe Wagner vs. Eric Prindle

Ron Sparks vs. Mark Holata

Neil Grove vs. Mike Hayes

Thiago Santos vs. Blagoi Ivanov

While the heavyweight tournament is still being finalized, the other three offer up some very intriguing match ups. Like season four and the summer series, Bellator’s season five will return to MTV2. New to this season will be a HD broadcast that fans can watch on the premium cable network, EPIX. As great as that sounds, beware, EPIX is not available everywhere so you’ll need to check your cable company to see if it’s available in your area.
