Fedor is coming to San Jose

The long talked about match up between Fedor Emelianenko and Fabricio Werdum was finally given a date and event today. The two will fight to determine the number one contender at Heavyweight June 26th in the promotions hometown of San Jose, California. Originally thought to be taking place on the April CBS card the fight was moved back multiple times for undisclosed reason. Those issues have apparently been resolved and the two will headline the CBS broadcast on June 26th event.

Many consider Fedor the Strikeforce Heavyweight champ but the actual champ is Alistair Overeem though the champ hasn’t defended his title since defeating Paul Buentello November of 2007. Yes that was 30 months ago and yet Overeem has fought 7 times overseas during that time going 6-0 & 1NC. That will finally change on May 15th though as the champ will finally defend the belt against Brett Rogers. Rogers is coming off a lose to Fedor by second round TKO last November but surprisingly gets the first title shot at Overeem. the winner will obviously be looking out the outcome of the fight June 26th to see who will likely be the next in line.

The current WAMMA Heavyweight champ Fedor is a staggering 32-1 during his career with half of them coming by way of submission. Werdum will pose a difficult task to submit though as he has never been tapped in his 18 fight MMA career and holds Black Belts in both BJJ and Judo, he’s also a 2 time ADCC World Submission Wrestling Championship. On their feet though the advantage is clearly on the side of Fedor’s even though Werdum has only been knocked out once. Also not to be forgotten is that Werdum already had a victory over the current champ Overeem back in 2006 for Pride via Kimura submission. The match up is a very solid test for ”The Last Emperor” and the storyline possibilities are very interesting depending on who wins both the title fight on May 15th and this fight on June 26th.

With the event being held again in San Jose we at MMA Valor will be covering the event in full force (See Strikefore: Evolution). You can expect to see interviews leading up to the event, Weigh-in coverage with pictures, event coverage and video from the post fight press conference as well.
