During last night’s UFC on FOX 6 preliminary card, lightweight TJ Grant made a huge statement. Not only was it his fourth consecutive win since moving down to the 155 pound weight class, but the way he defeated the very tough Matt Wiman put an exclamation point on things.

UFC on FOX 6 TJ GrantTJ Grant punished his opponent with brutally accurate elbows that sliced open the face of Wiman, who had come into the fight 5-1 in his last six bouts. From inside the clinch or from the pocket Grant consistently found a home for his elbows and the tough to finish Wiman just couldn’t take it anymore. With less than 10 seconds left in the opening round Grant finished Wiman from only the second time in the UFC veteran’s career.

Grant started his career as a welterweight and went 3-3 inside the Octagon but after a loss to Ricardo Almeida at UFC 124 Grant decided to drop down to lightweight and clearly it was the right decision. Grant is undefeated as a lightweight and holds wins over Shane Roller, Carlo Prater, Evan Dunham and now Matt Wiman. The latter two have most likely propelled the Canadian from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia into the top 10 of the UFC lightweight division.

With the addition of some top Strikeforce lightweights to the already stacked division there is no shortage of options for UFC and Grant’s possible next opponent. UFC veterans Jim Miller or Joe Lauzon would be a stiff test for Grant, former Strikeforce fighters Josh Thomson or Pat Healy would also be great matchups.

TJ Grant came into the UFC as a welterweight but he’s found a home at lightweight is leaving a mark within the promotion!
