When the UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones defeated Rashad Evans by unanimous decision at last weekend’s UFC 145, the first things that came to mind was “WOW, he made it look easy.” Not too long after that though my mind reset and the second thing that came to mind was “who’s next?” for Jon Jones.
Five and a half weeks before the UFC makes its debut in Sweden, the main event has been switched up due to injury. Sweden’s own Alexander Gustafsson was slated to face Antonio Rogerio Nogueira but a knee injury suffered while training has forced him to withdraw. Replacing the light heavyweight will be the hard-hitting Thiago Silva, who hasn’t fought since January of 2011.
The UFC’s first trip to Sweden will logically be filled with local talent but yesterday the UFC announce the event will also be headlined by a Swede. Rising light heavyweight prospect Alexander Gustafsson will face the veteran Antonio Rogerio Nogueira UFC on FUEL TV 2. The card will take place at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden and air live on FUEL TV on Saturday April 14th.
Saturday’s UFC 140: Jones vs. Machida card from Toronto, Canada was a brutal event to say the least. Well the Ontario Ministry of Consumer Services backed up those claim by suspending every fighter on the card received at least a 14 days. However seven fighters, including Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Tito Ortiz and Mark Hominick received much stiffer suspensions of 60 days following their defeats.
Once again MMA proved that you never know and that anything can happen when you step into the cage. Take tonight’s UFC 140 in Toronto, Canada for example, six of the 12 fights ended in the opening round while another three didn’t make it out of the second round. Coming off an exciting TUF 14 finale the Ultimate Fighting Championship is back this weekend with UFC 140 from Toronto, Canada. The second to last UFC event of 2011 will be headlined by the light heavyweight champion Jon Jones making his second title defense against former champion, Lyoto Machida.
This Saturday, Dana White and crew will make their way to the Air Canada Center in Toronto, Ontario for UFC 140: Jones vs. Machida. When this event was first announced, Lyoto Machida and Phil Davis were rumored to be the main event but it was eventually revealed that Davis was still recovering from a knee injury and would not be fighting. Later, it was thought that Jon Jones would defend his title against Rashad Evans, but that, too, was shut down due to a thumb injury in the Evans camp.
