Gina Carano is everywhere it seems these days, except inside the cage fighting. The Haywire star was on the Conan show this week and besides talking about the movie, Carano also made the hosts day by explaining how she compares cage fighting to sex.

WMMA pioneer Gina Carano was the first real face of the female side of mixed martial arts. Gina stormed the MMA world with her wicked good looks, charisma, and not to be overlooked her amazing fighting skill. Gina has been in the news a lot here the last couple of weeks, but not because of her in exploits inside the cage.

It’s been debated at great lengths that the popularity or dare I say the lack of overall popularity of women’s MMA is due to the fact that they haven’t yet had that defining fight that captures the world’s imagination. WMMA has its stars and faces to better market and promote the sport and they have done a magnificent job and they wouldn’t be where it’s at now without standout performers and personalities like Gina Carano and Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Santos.

It’s kind of unfortunate but WMMA still exhibits the appearance of being handled with “kid gloves” by many of the larger organizations that promote the female in the sport. The combination of lack of female competitors overall in the sport and the simple fact that it hasn’t been totally accepted by the masses is holding the women back. One thing WMMA does have going for them are a handful of “stars” that have shown they can put butts in the seats for their battles inside the cage.

The third edition of “The Body Issue” by ESPN the Magazine will feature the current  UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones in nothing but his birthday suit. Jones is not the first Mixed Martial Arts star to appear in “The Body Issue”, he’s actually the fifth, but the champ is the first from the UFC. 

Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Finally Returns on June 18

When the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix opened on February 13th with two of the four quarterfinal bouts taking place, it was the talk of the mixed martial arts world. With a total of eight top heavyweights locked in a single elimination tournament, Strikeforce was doing something not seen since the days of PRIDE.
