Next Month’s UFC 161 suffered a major loss this past weekend when the night’s main event was scratched and replaced by the co-main event. In an attempt to bolster the main card, a heavyweight bout between Roy Nelson and Stipe Miocic was added. The side effects of the resulting turn of events have currently left two fighters on the UFC 161 bench.
The UFC made its second trip to Brazil this year for tonight’s 13 bout UFC on FX 8 fight card. Headlined by an important middleweight bout featuring Vitor Belfort, who also in the main event of Brazilian card back in January.
Now that the XFC and Nick Newell have both said their sides of the story the promotion has returned its focus on finding the odd man out, Scott Holtzman, an opponent for next month’s XFC 24.
The UFC is returning to Boston on August 17th and according to reports, Joe Lauzon will be getting his wish to fight in his hometown. The Boston Native fought on the UFC 118 fight card in Boston back in 2010 and now the lightweight has been added to the debut card on the new FOX channel, FOX Sports 1.
One time UFC fighters Damacio Page, Junior Assuncao and Carlo Prater are all scheduled to fight later this month at LFC 20. For Page and Assuncao it will be their Legacy Fighting Championship debut, but for headliner Prater it will be his return to the promotion.
The inspirational story of MMA Fighter Nick Newell has taken an unfortunate and rather surprising turn. After defeating Eric Reynolds and winning the XFC lightweight title in December, Newell was paired up against Scott Holtzman after he defeated Jason Hicks at XFC 22. Newell was scheduled to make his first title defense next months at XFC 24 against Holtzman but the champion has refused the fight.
Heading into his March 22nd bout against Mike Rhodes at RFA 7, Brandon Thatch believed he was at the doorsteps of the UFC. The Colorado-based fighter was riding a seven fight winning streak and thought one more win would earn him a UFC contract. Having trained with Thatch in the past, UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre thought Brandon Thatch was already UFC caliber.
Riddled by injuries and out of action since June of 2011, former UFC interim heavyweight champion Shane Carwin announced his retirement today. The news of the fan favorite stepping away from the sport shouldn’t come as a surprise but that doesn’t take away from the disappointment.
