Where does UFC 108 rate?

Tonight the UFC will officially close out the 2009 year with UFC 108: Evans vs. Silva. They are usually set up to close the year out with a bang getting us excited for the coming year. In recent year we have been lucky enough to get at least one title fight to close the year. With all the injuries that have hit UFC 108 there will be no title fights tonight, in fact there really isn’t a main event. Evans vs. Silva was always suppose to be the co-main event but with all the injuriesit had to be moved to main event status. This caused a snow ball effect moving all the fights up one spot giving us Dustin Hazelett vs. Paul Daley as the co-main event tonight. Don’t get me wrong these fights are good but when you compare them to past year end events its clear UFC 108 is flawed.

Starting in 2006 the UFC has done a year end extravaganza’s starting with UFC 66: Liddell vs. Ortiz 2. They followed that up with 2007’s UFC 79: Nemesis and 2008 ended with UFC 92: Ultimate 2008. They all were packed with stars and title fights something this card is heavily lacking. To show you just what I mean here is a breakdown of the top 3 fights from the 4 year end events.

UFC 66: Liddell vs. Ortiz 2
Chuck Liddell vs. Tito Ortiz (Light Heavyweight title fight)
Forrest Griffin vs. Keith Jardine
Andre Arlovski vs. Marcio Cruz

UFC 79: Nemesis
Georges St.-Pierre vs. Matt Hughes (Welterweight title fight)
Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva
Lyoto Machida vs. Rameau Sokoudjou

UFC 92: Ultimate 2008

Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria (Interim Heavyweight title fight)
Rampage Jackson vs. Wanderlei Silva

UFC 108: Evans vs. Silva
Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva
Dustin Hazelett vs. Paul Daley
