An MMA Christmas Wish List

The holiday season is upon us and we are just days away from the jolly one coming down the chimney to bring those who have been good a little gift. If you were lucky enough to be on the “nice” list, you’ll be expecting your favorite video game, a good book or a pair of socks under the tree.

Fighters Only 2009 MMA awards

The second annual Fighters Only MMA awards were last night in Las Vegas. The live show aired on Versus.com and will air on versus TV January 6th. They try to make the show close to any other awards so on these days with the funny host, performances and the skits that mock people. Well the show had all this, but none of it was good and that’s being very nice about it. I wasn’t around to see the first few Academy Awards or Grammy’s so maybe they were bad too when they just started. Enough with that bashing of the show, if you saw it you’ll understand what I mean. Lets get the main reason we forced ourselves to watch the whole show, the awards. (All awards were given based off fans votes)

MMA Valor Forums are now open [again]

Today I’m very happy to announce the re-opening of the MMA Valor Forums on the site. Use these forums as a place to give “your” take on the world of MMA. Let’s talk it up as I will be a frequent contributor to the forums and will try and talk with all of you. Right now I have left the forums pretty basic because I want you all to tell me what topics you want on there. Use the comments section below to tell me what Categories and forums you want on there and I’ll add it. I seriously want the forums to be an outlet for my readers to talk MMA so I need your input.

Women's top 5??

With Cyborg Santos being crowned the women’s champ Saturday I started working on my top five. Women’s MMA is still in its early stages and many of the fights don’t get seen. So having not seen much women’s MMA fight’s I have to rely on fighters I doknow, their records and head to head fights. Cyborg & Carano are #1 and #2 for having just fought in the title fight. The rest of the top 5 gets tough as I have 5 fighters to fill 3 sports. Marloes Coenen is 16-3 and is rumored to be the next in line for Cyborg. Erin Toughill is 10-2-1 with a win over Coenen and hasn’t lost since 2004. Sarah Kaufman is 10-0 and is currently fighting in Strikeforce. Roxanne Modafferi is 13-4 and also has a win over Coenen. Last is Tara Larosa who is 17-1 with a win over Modafferi and hasn’t lost in 6 years…. I might need some help.

Strikeforce Recap

I was suppose to blog during the event but I ended up twitting the whole night. Going back and forth with Zak Woods of Watchkalibrun. The televised portion started with us finding out the Hieron vs. Taylor fight was moved off the televised portion to fill time on the undercard.

We started off with the Heavyweight fight between Werdum vs. Kyle. The fight didn’t last long as Werdum locked up a guillotine chock  on Kyle a minute into the fight. This really wasn’t much of a surprise as most figured the superior ground game of Werdum would show. We next moved onto the Interim Lightweight title fight between Gilbert Melendez & Mitsuhiro Ishida. Melendez was looking for revenge having already lost to Ishida back in 2007. Melendez looked great in the first two rounds with sharp, clean punches and solid take down defense. By the third round Melendez had worn down Ishida and finished him off by ground and pound. Next up was the Light Heavyweight championship fight between the champ Babalu Sobral & Gegard Mousasi. Didn’t get comfortable in this fight as Mousasi got top position on Babalu and landed several solid power shots that KO’d Babalu. Mousasi looked calm and unfazed as if it was just another day. The night ended with the main event Gina Carano vs. Cyborg Santos. Carano the all american knock out has been dubbed the face of female MMA. Santos is the aggresive hard hitting brazilian who many in the US had never heard of…. Until now! Santos came out like a bat out of hell preasuring Carano at all times. Santos took Carano down rather easily and was noticably stronger also. Carano did land some good shots on Santos but she was never in any real trouble. Santos took down Carano late in the first round and started landing some heavy bombs. Carano could do nothing and curled up in a ball as the ref stopped the fight right before the end of the round. Santos becomes the first ever strikeforce womens champion.

Besides the Hieron fight being moved off the main card the night was full of some good fights. Where Santos and Strikeforce go from here though is going to be interesting to see. Santos is nowhere near the marketable fighter the Carano is and I don’t know if you can sell a main event  with Santos alone.

I ended up going 4-1 with my predictions putting me at 9-7 overall.

Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg Weigh-ins

Gina-Carano

Today was the Strikeforce weigh-ins and it was my first experience with Mixed Martial Arts weigh ins. The place was pretty crowded, it didn’t help that it was in a very small room either. By the time they opened the doors to let people in, they were already about to close them and unfortunately maybe half or less actually made it into the weigh-ins.
