Forrest Griffin UFC 148 001Before Dana White got into the post UFC 160 proceedings last night he made the startling announcement that Forrest Griffin was retiring. The original Ultimate Fighter winner and former light heavyweight champion briefly took the stage to answer questions and in typical Forrest Griffin fashion he was more comedic then informative.

UFC President Dana White also said that Griffin would remain with the UFC but he wasn’t sure in what capacity. Griffin did answer one question seriously and suggested that he would like to work with all the UFC charities, to which White thought would be a great idea.

Forrest Griffin defeated Stephan Bonnar in The Ultimate Fighter season 1 final in a crazy bout that will forever go down in UFC history. Their fight is considered the turning point in MMA that set the sport and the UFC on a path to where it currently sits. Griffin also coached a season of The Ultimate Fighter opposite then light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Forrest Griffin would go on to defeat Jackson by unanimous decision to further his legacy.

Griffin (19-7) has been plagued with injuries and had only fought three times over the last three years. He went 2-1 in those bouts but suffered an MCL tear and ACL stain that forced him out of his December 2012 UFC 155 bout. Griffin’s last fight was at UFC 148 where he defeated Tito Ortiz via unanimous decision in their trilogy finale.

After the UFC 160 post fight press conference Dana White told the media that Griffin along with Stephan Bonnar (who retired earlier this year) would be elected into the UFC HOF. The UFC usually holds the Hall of Fame inductions during their fan Expo’s but it’s unsure if Griffin and Bonnar will be inducted at this year’s Fan Expo set for July 5th and 6th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Forrest Griffin finishes his UFC fighting career with a 10-5 record inside the Octagon that include five “Fight of the night” and one “Submission of the Night” honors.
