UFC 146 All Heavyweight Main Card Delivered the Goods

When the thought of an all heavyweight UFC 146 main card came to mind months ago the first thing that popped into most fans head was “no thanks, too boring”. After tonight’s UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir card they might be asking when the UFC can put together another card like this.

From top to bottom the UFC 146 card delivered. The night’s heavyweight free preliminary card saw former champions earn much-needed wins along with four first round stoppages. The seven bouts lead into the “big” show as 10 heavyweights laid it all on the line.

The knock on the heavyweights has always been they are hit or miss inside the cage, you either get an exciting fight that ends early or two gassed out big men, hurling wild strikes with little power behind them. That’s what makes last night’s UFC 146 main card so great because the fighters defied the odds, produced five exciting bouts with an average fight time of just 4:30 (21:50 total).

Headlining the heavyweight main card was the UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos making his first title defense against the former champion Frank Mir. Originally it was supposed to be Alistair Overeem but one random drug test later and the card was turned upside down. Having stepped in on short notice, Mir was confident heading into the title fight but had no answer for the speed that the champion brings to the table. Unable to get the fight to the ground, Mir became a punching bag for Dos Santos as the champion picked him apart on his way to a successful title defense.

The man Dos Santos defeated to win the heavyweight title; Cain Velasquez returned to action in the night’s co-main event and put himself in position for a possible rematch with a TKO win over Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.

The success of the all heavyweight main card could open the door to other all “insert weight class here” main cards. How about an all light heavyweight main card or an all bantamweight main card when Dominick Cruz returns to unify the title?
