Jacare Souza vs. Tim Kennedy for the Strikeforce Middleweight Title
It has been confirmed that the vacant Strikeforce Middleweight Title will be on the line this August in Houston. Jake Shields vacated his title following a unanimous decision victory over Dan Henderson in his last fight on his contract with Strikeforce. Jacare Souza and Tim Kennedy will finally get their shot at gold when they collide at Strikeforce: Houston.
Souza (12-2) has been successful in his two bouts with Strikeforce. In his debut, he defeated Matt Lindland with a first round submission. Souza then earned a unanimous decision over Joey Villasenor showing the ability to avoid the standup and win the fight with his superior grappling.
Kennedy (12-2) is also undefeated under the Strikeforce banner. All three of his wins have come by submission and with each fight he continues to impress. Kennedy will look to continue his impressive career by adding a win over a top opponent and a championship belt.
Both fighters are similar in style, with jiu-jitsu being their biggest strengths, however Souza likely has a slight advantage because of his many years of experience within the discipline. Kennedy though should not be counted out because of ones experience and as they say, that’s why you play them. It’s hard to say what will happen in this fight as both fighters have proven they are well-rounded fighters.
Strikeforce: Houstonwill take place August 21 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. In addition to the Middleweight Title bout, Light Heavyweight Champion King Mo Lawal will make his first title defense against Rafael Cavalcante.
