The appetizers to tonight’s UFC 134 main event from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro were the preliminary card on Facebook and Spike TV. Featuring nine Brazilian born fighters, it was a perfect lead a PPV main card filled with five more Brazilians.
Fans in attendance had been waiting nearly 13 years The Ultimate Fighting Championship to return to Brazil and it showed. The crowd was loud from the opening fight and at times drowned out the voices of Mike Goldberg and Kenny Florian. The Brazilian fans even busted out an impressive “wave” that according to Florian had the building shaking.
Oh and by the way, a Brazilian win in all six of the bouts that had one fighting in it.
135 lbs.: Yves Jabouin vs. Ian Loveland – Yves Jabouin Split decision (27-30, 29-28 29-28)
The only fight with a Brazilian not involved was a back and forth action packed fight that clearly gave at least one judge trouble scoring the bout.
145 lbs.: Felipe Arantes vs. Yuri Alcantara – Yuri Alcantara unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
Alcantara looked the better fighter from the opening bell against Arantes, showing speed and power that had the fellow Brazilian backing up.
170 lbs.: Erick Silva vs. Luis Ramos - Erick Silva 1st rd TKO
Less than a minute into the fight Silva lands a big overhand right that drops Ramos and after a few punches on the ground the fight was over. WOW!
145 lbs.: Johnny Eduardo vs. Raphael Assuncao – Raphael Assuncao by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Assuncao gets his first UFC win be controlling Eduardo.
170 lbs.: David Mitchell vs. Paulo Thiago – Paulo Thiago by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
The Brazilians love themselves some Paulo Thiago as his fight might have actual caused the first “wave” to be performed by the fans in attendance.
Spike TV Prelims:
185 lbs.: Dan Miller vs. Rousimar Palhares – Rousimar Palhares by Unanimous Decision (29-27, 30-27, 30-25)
A good first round by the two ended in the most awkward way as Palhares rocked and dropped Miller with a head kick and after following it up with some ground and pound thought the fight was over. It was not and Herb Dean restarted it and it was Miller that rocked Palhares to end the round though. In the second round Palhares took over and bloodied up Miller, almost finishing Miller multiple times.
155 lbs.: Spencer Fisher vs. Thiago Tavares – Thiago Tavares by 2nd rd TKO
Tavares fought very smart in this bout and took Fisher to the ground at will. Fisher had no answer for the takedowns and the referee stopped the fight after fisher had turtle up.
