UFC 154: St-Pierre vs. Condit Fight Night Bonuses
The UFC welterweight champion returned to the Octagon tonight at UFC 154 and walk out was again the “undisputed champion”. In front of a packed house in Montreal, Georges St-Pierre took on the interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit in a 25 minute war that left both fighters battered, bruised and bloody.
There classic main event was a great conclusion to a UFC 154 card that only saw three finishes in 12 bouts. Four finishes in you count the finish from Alessio Sakara on Patrick Cote that was eventually a disqualification in favor of Cote due to multiple illegal strikes to the back of the head by Sakara that ended the fight. Cote was head with a legal shot before that and while they were illegal shots, the fight should have been ruled a no-contest instead of a DQ.
With limited finishes and a grueling main event, it wasn’t that difficult to pick the “Fight Night Bonuses” for UFC 154.
Submission of the Night: Ivan Menjivar
- Once the Russian Azamat Gashimov got Ivan Menjivar to the canvas the veteran was looking for the armbar submission. Gashimov muscled and picked up Menjivar to escape the first one but when he tried the same thing the next time, he wasn’t so lucky. Menjivar ended up with a belly down armbar that had the arm of Gashimov bend in all the wrong directions, forcing a tap.
Knockout of the Night: Johny Hendricks
- Once again it was the deadly left hand of Johny Hendricks that ended a fight in less than a minute. The welterweight quickly closed the distance on Martin Kampmann and landed a clean left to the jaw. Kampmann went flying to the canvas; hitting his head on the canvas and eating one more left for Hendricks before the referee stopped it. Hendricks asked for a title shot after the fight and it’s really hard to argue against him being next in line.
Fight of the Night: Georges St-Pierre vs. Carlos Condit
- The UFC 154 main event was exactly what you’d expect from the top two fighters in the world at 170 lbs. Georges St-Pierre was very aggressive and securing seven takedowns over 25 minutes. After losing the first two rounds Carlos Condit landed a left head hick the GSP never saw at it almost ended the fight but St-Pierre recovered and ended up winning that round on two of the three ringside judges.
The fighters that won UFC 154 bonuses tonight each received $70K on top of the contracted pay.
