Strikeforce: LA not so live results

IMG 1485 edited 300x78 Strikeforce: LA not so live resultsTrying to capture the action at E3 Strikeforce has pushed out a much smaller fight card for Strikeforce: LA then what is normally seen with only six total fights. Tonight’s fights will be held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California with the main event being a catchweight fight between Robbie Lawler and Renato Sobral.

Somehow I got the last row in the press area that comes with no table, plug or oxygen mask either. It appears having the event at the Nokia works well for the E3 convention but not so good for the media. Strikeforce even squeezed two rows for paying fans in between the tabled press and the rest of us. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you though right?

Live Results:

Fight #1- 135 lbs.: Marcus Kowal (134.75 lbs.) vs. Hugo Sandoval (135.5 lbs.) – Sandoval by 2nd rd. TKO

Kowal looked good in round one control the fight, Sondoval got one point taken away with an illegal up kick. Start of round two and Sandoval catches Kowal dropping him quickly ending the fight.

Fight #2- 160 lbs.: RJ Clifford (159.5 lbs.) vs. Jeremy Umphries (159.5 lbs.) – Umphries by 2nd rd. Submission (RNC)

Very close first round with most of in the clinch or scrambling for position. Clifford might have stolen that round getting top position at the end. Second round and Umphries get an early takedown and gets Clifford’s back. Clifford in big trouble and refuses to tap but it all done as he is out cold.

Live Card

Fight #3- 160 lbs.: KJ Noons (159.5 lbs.) vs. Conor Heun (159.5 lbs.) – KJ Noons wins by Split Decision (30-27 Heun, 29-28 Noons, 29-28 Noons)

Heunrushes Noons as round one starts and is keeping the pressure on but Noons is handling it and getting in some good strikes. Heun has slowed a bit and Noons is looking very comfortable, which might have been why he got taken down. Heun quickly get his back and then mount while looking for submissions and doing damage too. Noons with 30 seconds left reverses andgets up closing the round with a nice punch.

We start roundtwo with the two meeting in the center of the ring. Noons is still looking confident even though he lost the last round. For obvious reasons Noons is getting the better of Heun in striking, finding a home for those punches often. With 90 seconds the fight turned into a brawl as each throw haymakers andboth getting wobbled. As the round closes Heun gets a push takedown possible stealing the round.

Round three and Noons could possibly be down two rounds to none here. Noons is looking tired and losing the striking now and also retreating at times. Noons has cut Heun above the left eye and the two and looking gassed. Noons coming on late but what will the judges think….

Fight #4 – 185 lbs.: Tim Kennedy (185.5 lbs.) vs. Trevor Prangley (185.5 lbs.) – Kennedy wins by 1st round submission (RNC)

Round one and Kennedy shoots in looking for a takedown with Prangley not having any of that. In the clinch and Prangley get a hip toss but Kennedy gets right back up scoring a takedownhimself. Kennedy moves to mount landing some ground and pound until Prangley gives up his back. Prangley trying to get up get caught with a nice rear naked choke.

Fight #5- 170 lbs.: Marius Zaromskis (169.5 lbs.) vs. Evangelista Santos (171 lbs.) – Santos wins by 1st round TKO

We are underway with Santos taking the center of the cage and Zaromskis moving around. Santos punching with everything he has trying to end it early. Santos shakes up Zaromskis with a flurry but the fight continues. Both landing some load kicks but Santos is staying in the pocket and drops Zaromskis with a left as Zaromskis jumps in for a knee.

Fight #6 [Main Event]- 195 lbs.: Robbie Lawler (195 lbs.) vs. Renato Sobral (193.5 lbs.) – Sobral wins by Unanimous Decision (29-28 on all cards)

Main events time! Here we go with round one as the fighters do not touch gloves. Lawler misses with a right and Sobral locks him up looking for the takedown. Lawler not going down easy though and Big john breaks them up. Flying knee from lawler and back into the clinch as Sobraldoesn’t want any part of the stand up. Sobral scores two takedowns but Lawler gets back up without much damage. Sobral has him up against the cage again with 30 seconds left they break andthe round comes to a close.

Round two starts with a big kick from Sobral but Lawler lands a clean shot sending Sobral retreating. Lawler is beginning to fins the range on his punches as the two begin to gas a little. Sobral lands and Lawler is hurt, yet Sobral doesn’t jump on the attack. We are under two minutes now and Sobral tries for a takedown but get’s nothing. Now less than one minute and Sobralis getting in some good striking as the round comes to an end.

Final round now and Sobral looks to be the fresher man. Lawler is trying to turn the fight into a slug-fest with Sobral is still looking for the takedown. Close fight andwhoever takes this round could steal the fight but they are both tired. Crowd is chanting “Bobalu” as he does a crazy spinning back fist. One of those kicks must have busted up Lawler’s rips because he is covering them and looking limited in movement. Under a minute now and Lawleris trying to steal the round andfight in the judges eyes. Round ends and this one might be close but its clear Lawler’s left ribs are jacked up.

Scott Coker at the post fight press conference gave the attendees as 5,259 for a $418K gate.
