Why the victory by Fabricio Werdum shouldn’t surprise us

The Face of Fabricio Werdum 293x300 Why the victory by Fabricio Werdum shouldnt surprise us Following the last nights upset victory by Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1) over Fedor Emelianenko (31-2) the world was stunned. The man who hadn’t seen defeat in almost ten years, winning 27 fights in a row with one no contest during that stretch. According to the betting lines Fedor was a heavy favorite at (-) 800 and Werdum by most wasn’t given a chance.

In retrospective though we shouldn’t be surprised by this outcome and what Werdum pulled off. Yes he was only 2-2 in the UFC but Werdum has beaten current Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem, Aleksander Emelianenko, Antonio Silva and Gabriel Gonzaga twice. He is also a highly decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and a black belt in Judo as well. Most importantly though and something that was grossly over looked was just how Werdum and his crew turned Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum into “The Fabricio Werdum show”. From Thursdays per fight press conference to well into the late night last night Werdum showed a level of confidence and relaxation was on another level.Thursday as the media walked into the press conference Werdum and his entourage could be heard singing, playfully joking and taking pictures with what seemed like everyone. Their fun didn’t stop when the press conference started either, they were not rude by any means just having a great time.At the weigh-ins Friday, Werdum was again all smiles and seemed to have this aura of self confidence.Come Saturday and fight night Werdum and friends were seen walking the Arena floor during the preliminary fights stopping to shake hands with a few fans along the way. While not unheard of, it just goes to show how relaxed and confident Werdum was. Then fight time and we all know what happened next, Werdum beat the unbeatable. We should have known it would end like this though, no way would “The Fabricio Werdum show” end on a sad note.
