Heavyweight Tournament Equals Strange at Bellator 75

Bellator 075 129x200 Heavyweight Tournament Equals Strange at Bellator 75Some things just aren’t meant to be and last night’s Bellator 75 main event was proof of that. The third time was not the charm for Bellator and the Eric Prindle versus Thiago Santos heavyweight bout as their bizarre trilogy has hopefully come to an end.

For those keeping score at home, the Prindle v. Santos match up has rendered a no contest, a called off fight and after last night’s Bellator 75, a disqualification. At last year’s Bellator 59 a groin kick from Santos ruled the fight a no contest and when the two tried to rematch Prindle was sick one week and Santos overweight the next week. The stars seemed to align last night when they final got into the cage for their rematch, problem was another groin kick or shall I say ax kick, ended the fight. Unlike last time, it was Prindle delivering the nut shot and instead of a no contest the fight was ruled a DQ in favor of Santos who now advances to the tournament semifinals.

Things weren’t all groin kicks and the heavyweight tournament did actually start out normal with two impressive finishes. Vinicius Queiroz and Richard Hale looked impressive with first round finishes and in retrospect would have been better suited for the Bellator 75 main and co-main events. Alas they were not and the lasting impression on last night will be Brett Rogers completely lost against the much taller Alexander Volkov and of course Thiago Santos being cup checked by a Eric Prindle ax kick.

Good thing Bellator returns next week to wash that bad taste out of their mouths.

MAIN CARD:

Thiago Santos defeated Eric Prindle by 1st rd. DQ (Groin Shot)

  • Déjà Vu! Prindle dropped a heavy ax kick to the cup of Santos seconds after the ref warned him to watch the groin. Santos could not continue and Prindle was disqualified. Here to hoping these two NEVER fight each other again!

Alexander Volkov defeated Brett Rogers by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

  • Rogers had no clue how to fight the taller, longer Volkov and looked horrible in the cage.

Richard Hale defeated Mike Wessel by 1st rd. TKO

  • Hale dominated this fight, opening up with a flurry that forced Wessel to look for a takedown. Hale defended, ended up in a dominate position dropping ground and pound.

Vinicius Queiroz defeated Mark Holata by 1st rd Submission (armbar)

  • Holata hurt Queiroz with a left hand but the Brazilian survived the ground and pound long enough to slip on a bell down armbar.

PRELIMINARY CARD:

Chase Beebe defeated Bo Harris by Unanimous Decision

Joe Williams defeated Rod Montoya by 1st rd. Submission (Rear Naked Choke)

Jason Graves defeated Rafal Skibinski by 1st rd. Submission (Rear Naked Choke)

Anthony Gomez defeated Jose Medina by 1st rd. Submission (Rear Naked Choke)

Cliff Wright Jr. defeated Bobby Reardanz by 1st rd. Submission (Rear Naked Choke)
