Coming into his non-title bout against Chad Robichaux at Bellator 41, Bantamweight champion Zach Makovsky had never tasted victory by way of knockout. The wrestler out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania had a record of 12-2 in his 14 professional bouts with wins via submission five times and seven decisions, yet no knockouts.

That all changed last night in his 15th bout when he grounded out Robichaux with a flurry of left hands in the third round for the TKO victory. Makovsky had taken Robichaux down in the final round and from full mount Robichaux gave up his back in hopes to escape. The champ didn’t let him escape though and would flatten him out and finish the fight at 2:02 in the third.

Makovsky had dominated the match, taking the undefeated Robichaux down practically at will throughout the match, looking to finish multiple times via submission. Robichaux, who came into the bout 11-0 with 10 submissions escaped every attempt at submission Makovsky had to offer but the pressure applied by the bantamweight champion was just too much.

Season four doesn’t include a bantamweight tournament so Makovsky will have to wait for his first title defense. Bellator’s fifth season is scheduled to include a bantamweight tournament but that won’t have the winner facing Makovsky until season six. It’s doubtful he’ll wait that long so expect to see Makovsky back next season in another non-title bout.
